On 21 August 2011 a temple for the local Sikh community was inaugurated near Pessina Cremonese, a farmers village near Milan. The construction of the building, the largest second temple of Europe, with a space of 2.352 square meters for 500 worshippers cost 1,3 million Euro. Further funds will be needed to erect the five golden cupolas of the temple. The Gurdwara follows Shri Guru Kalgidhar Singh Sabha. Sikhs are a religious minority in Italy, which has the second biggest Sikh population in Europe after the United Kingdom. They are estimated to number between 60,000 and 70,000. There are about 22 gurdwaras across the country, mainly in northern Italy where many members of the community are engaged in agricultural work.
