CHIOGGIA, THE LITTLE VENICE
Chioggia is a miniature version of Venice, with the characteristic narrow streets known as calli and few canals, chief among them the Canale Vena. On a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice the city was conquered by nearby Venice in 1380.
Chioggia served Carlo Goldoni as the setting of his play Le baruffe chiozzotte, one of the classics of Italian literature. Fishing, historically the livelihood of the harbour, remains a significant economic sector.
