Italy-The Whites Cities

105 images Created 3 Nov 2015

The Valle d'Itria of Puglia focuses an incredible Mediterranean architecture of "white cities”. Four towns, apparently similar but each with a different soul. Martina Franca, with a popular architecture punctuated by spontaneous palaces and Baroque churches. Locorotondo, with its concentric plant from which the name, is a true urban monument. Ostuni, an unreal total white casbah with the medieval cathedral like a crown on the highest hill, the earth. Cisternino is one of the most beautiful villages of Puglia, a small untouched jewel of spontaneous architecture, made of terraces and stone stairs.

  • Ostuni, the old town. On the top of the hill the Purgatorio church (left) and the cathedral (right). The so-called "Old Town" is Ostuni's citadel built on top of a hill and still fortified by the ancient walls. Ostuni is regarded as an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as "the White Town" ("La Città Bianca", in Italian) for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture.
