Italy-Turin's rowing clubs
Turin's rowings clubs
In Torino, notwithstanding the climate, people go rowing and its rivers were the cradle of Italian rowing. The local people always lived along the banks of the Po river, home of the historic rowing clubs like Armida, Caprera, Cerea and Esperia. The oldest is the Reale Societa Canottieri Cerea founded in 1863, the oldest rowing club in Italy and possibly in continental Europe. The Italian Rowing Club which launched the first "Code of the Regattas", now FISA (Federazione Italiana Canottaggio) was born here in 1892. Perched on the bank above the river, the clubhouse is filled with rowing memorabilia of all sorts and eras. Armida's athletes have gained 62 titles as champions of Italy during its 140-year history, participating in the Berlin and Rome Olympics. In the last years, due also the better environmental landscape, Turin's citizens on the weekends stroll much more along the river's banks, mainly on the city's St John Baptist celebration, when popular regattas organized by the Amici del Fiume club take place on the river until the night.
