North Wales
North Wales was named one of the top 10 regions in the world for travellers in 2017 by Lonely Planet and in 2018 Wales will celebrates the Year of the Sea to highlight the inspiring coastal landscapes and the adrenaline and sports that are available in the “Adventure Capital” of Britain, zip lining, biking and walking. North Wales ha also the town with the longest name in Europe: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
Wales is also rich of history with almost 600 castles and the most beautiful are in the north ,like Caernafon castle. In 1283 King Edward I of England began to build the walled town and this grand scale castle as administrative centre of north Wales. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the castle's walls are reminiscent of the Walls of Constantinople. Bettween the others castles Conwy is a spectacular 13th century castle overlooking the sea and Harlech Castle, built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales for UNESCO is one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe". The architecture shows also places like the colourful, fairy-tale-like Portmeirion village, a wonderfully eccentric slice of Italianesque architecture and Mediterranean serenity, overlooking the estuary of the River Dwyryd. Portmeirion was the brainchild of a single architect, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who didn't complete his dream project until 1975, when he was in his nineties. Llandudno, also called the Queen of the Welsh Resorts, has some of the most elegant seaside Victorian architecture in Britain, and in 2015was voted as the third best tourism destination in the UK by TripAdvisor, after London and Edinburgh.The mining past of North Wales leaved an heritage of vintage trains like the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways stretching for 40 miles through the Snowdonia National Park.
