Dunfermline Palace is attached to the historic Dunfermline Abbey, occupying a site between the abbey and deep gorge to the south.  The palace was given as a wedding present by the king, James VI, to Anne of Denmark after their marriage.

King Robert the Bruce was buried in 1329 in the choir. Bruce’s heart rests in Melrose, but his bones were reinterred with fitting pomp in 1818 below the pulpit of the New church.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719 Eilean Donan lay in ruins until  Lt Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle.
