A side of Turkey far from the holiday brochures, from Tekirova, the ancient greek city of Phaselis in a peaceful natural harbour, to Demre with the Lycian tombs of Myra and the church of St Nicholas where the history of Santa Klaus is believed to habe begun when Nicholas, a Christian bishop, gave anonymous gifts to poor village's girls. At the eastern end of the village Kale, crowned by a St John's Knights castle, a necropolis with some well preserved Lycian sarcophagi emerges from the sea. Not far from Kas and Kalkan, the most important seaside towns, are the ruins of the Xantos old Greek city and Patara beach, one of the most scenic of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. At the end of this itinerary the Byzantine monastery ruins on Gemiler Island are not far from Fethiye harbour.
