The preparations for the Carnival begin many months before the event as elaborate costumes are designed and produced over a period of months. Maracatù naçao celebrates the "King of Congo" and the "Queen of Angola" a old slaves tradition. Maracatù groups, unique to Pernambuco, are mainly black and wear bright costumes.
