It was built in 1921, designed by the Slovene architect Ivan Vurnik in a “national style” that is related to Secessionism but clearly distinct from it. The architect’s wife, Helena Vurnik, was Viennese, but adopted Slovene nationality and was given charge of the building’s painting. She researched Slovenian folk art, but the dazzling facade is ultimately her own creation.
