Here were the oldest slate quarries of Fontanabuona Valley and with no roads the only way to transport the slate plates to the small harbours along the coast were rough trails like this, one of the few survived for centuries. The Lavagnine, the "Slate women" transported plates until 50 kg on the head without shoes with 3-4 travels every day.
