  • Tanis 70 km northeast of Zagazig, was a important Egyptian city capital at time of powerful Pharaohs like Pepi I. around 2330 BC. A tomb of the royal necropolis where French archeologists discovered important royal tombs few years before the II world War. The city was believed until some years ago to be the Biblical city where the Hebrews were persecuted and has been also one location for the movie Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Until today only a small part has been excavated but so far the excavations has revealed the foundations of many temples.

  • Qasr Ibrahim,  a massive fortress that dominated the east bank of Nile  today is an island in the middle of Lake Nasser. It is the only archeoloogical place in Nubia that, by its position, still survived in the same place above the waters of the Lake Nasser. Once the Nubia, a region rich in gold, was a necessary link between Equatorial Africa and the Mediterranean civilisations. The pharaohs build many temples in Nubia, the most grandiose expression is Abu Simbel built by Ramesses II. In 1971, with the construction of the Aswan High Dam, an extraordinary campaign of UNESCO saved many temples. The most difficult rescue operation was the salvage of Abu Simbel monumental complex. Today only few small cruise ships reach the Nubian monuments, far from the mass tourism of Nile valley.

  • Kerak, the famous crusader castle. The construction began in the 1140s and the  Crusaders called it Crac des Moabites or "Kerak in Moab". Because of its position east of the Jordan River, Kerak was able to control the trade routes from Damascus to Egypt and Mecca. In 1176 Raynald of Chatillon gained possession of Kerak harassing the trade caravans. In 1183 Saladin besieged the castle in response to Raynald's attacks. and after the Battle of Hattin in 1187, Saladin  finally captured it in 1189.

Wadi Rum is known also for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18.
